A pulley is a device that consists of a wheel with an axle or shaft. It can help move or change the direction of a tight cable or belt, or transfer power from the shaft to the cable or belt. If the pulley is attached to a frame or shell that does not give power to a shaft, but only guides the cable or applies a force, then the frame or shell is called a block, and the pulley can be called a sheave.
A pulley can have one or more grooves between its edges to hold the cable or belt in place. The cable or belt that moves the pulley can be made of rope, wire, rubber, or metal.
